Steady, paid work for musicians is out there in far greater volume than most players realize. It just isn't posted where musicians usually look. Cruise lines, resorts, theme parks and show productions hire instrumentalists and vocalists year-round, on contracts that actually pay a salary. Here's who's hiring and where those auditions get posted.
Cruise ship show bands. The single largest recurring employer of live musicians. Lines cast rockband vocalists, keys, guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, trombone and sax, plus piano bar entertainers, guitar soloists, country duos, Latin duos and mainstream duos. Contracts are salaried, with room and board covered.
Piano bar and duo contracts. Solo and duo acts work cruise lounges, resorts and hotel circuits on multi-month engagements. Strong repertoire and the ability to read a room matter as much as chops.
Resorts, casinos and theme parks. Resident show bands, atmosphere musicians and seasonal event work, often on renewable contracts.
Show and theatre pits. Touring productions, dinner theatres and regional houses hire musical directors and pit players for runs.
Most major lines run a pre-registration invited call: you apply first, and if you look like a fit they invite you to a live audition in a specific city. You'll typically be asked to prepare set material supplied in advance, bring your own instrument and accessories, and have a song list ready. Show-band roles often want doubling ability, and vocalists are frequently expected to front multiple genres. Sight-reading is a real advantage for pit and show-band work.
Cruise line and production-company portals. The most reliable source, and the most commonly missed. Lines publish dated city auditions directly to their own entertainment pages, which most musicians never think to check.
Casting and music agencies. Several agencies cast musicians specifically for cruise and resort contracts and post their own notices.
Facebook groups. Working-musician communities pass gigs around constantly, but posts scroll away within hours.
